Anointing With Therapeutic Essential Oils Today
Penny LeClair
I feel we are in a time of much confusion and reliance on a worldly system for relief to our emotional, physical and financial difficulties, without receiving answers.   I compiled this article to share that anointing isn’t for yesterday; it is for today and should be practiced in the life of believers on a regular basis. I personally have found that in times of prayer, anointing myself and family with therapeutic essential oils, we have opened up the realm for God work miracles in our lives, and it is my passion to share what has worked for us.
In Biblical times, the practice of anointing with essential oil was reserved for kings and priests. Today, many believers in Jesus Christ are discovering essential oil’s divine purpose in their life, as a kingdom of priests. 1 Peter 2:5 tells us, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. As a kingdom of priests, Jesus, the anointed one reigns as our King of Kings.
We as believers can rightfully anoint ourselves with therapeutic essential oil as a physical manifestation of our being filled continuously with the Holy Spirit, as oil in the Bible is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.  John 6:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. As you anoint yourself, acknowledge and invite the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you in your daily activities and your healing process. You will find an explosion of results.
As believers we were also directed to anoint with oil during a fast, Matthew 6:17 says, But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face. Many believers today are discovering that anointing with therapeutic essential oils can be spiritually enhancing, along with enhancing and restoring physical and emotional health.
TERMINOLOGY: To be “anointed” is, among other things, to be made sacred (consecrated); to be set apart and dedicated to serve God; to be imparted with enabling gifts and grace; to be divinely designated, inaugurated, or chosen for some purpose. Indeed, the English word anoint derives from the ancient Latin inunctus, meaning “rub or smear with oil”.
CONNECTION TO ESSENTIAL OIL: The Bible Dictionary mentions only two types of anointing: with oil or the Holy Spirit. In short, anointing and oil are much more integrally related than most people realize, which explains why Bible translators sometimes use anoint and oil interchangeably as synonymous verbs (e.g., Isa. 21:5).
WHY FRAGRANT OIL: God is obviously lovers of sweet-smelling fragrances and perfumes, words (or forms of them) which appear in Scripture 41 times and 35 times, respectively. Spices – in the context of anointing oils, perfume, food, and incense – are mentioned throughout the Bible: Our faith is deepened, enriched and brought closer to God as we begin to study and understand the spiritual meaning of biblical fragrances. The healing oils, or essential oils as they are known today, are the aromatic, volatile, distilled liquids of certain plants known and esteemed for their therapeutic qualities. They are referenced in both biblical and ancient secular history, and are generally regarded as being man's first known medicine
Isaiah 10:27 writes, “the yoke [of the evil one] will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.”
James 5:14-16 directs us, “Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
  1. Anoint as an act of consecration and dedication, a setting apart for a special purpose in God’s kingdom.
  2. Anoint yourself every morning, while meditating and the study of God’s Word for success in your day.
  3. Anoint yourself as a preparation for fasting, praise and worship.
  4. Anoint yourself and others in times of sickness, fear, anxiety, oppression of the enemy, end of mourning.
  5. Anoint your home and your possessions for protection.
I personally have found such freedom, joy, health and peace in anointing myself and meditating daily on the Word of God. Joshua 1:8 I pray that as you experience the Word of God and these God given oils they will bring you freedom, joy, health and peace, Spirit, Soul and Body.
